Using Background Jobs with Sidekiq and Rails – Mike Perham

You know how to make a controller and view in Ruby on Rails. But what’s a background job? How do I use them to make my website as fast as possible? This talk will introduce the notion of background jobs, why you might want to use them and show how to integrate Sidekiq with your Rails app to make background jobs easy!

Thank you to Confreaks for recording video and to New Relic for hosting.

Hi, thanks for working on this. Nevertheless I tried Sidekiq for my project whereby I used Payola-Payment Gem. Payola-Payments Gem uses sidekiq, and after I tried setting my Background Work setting my Payola to use Sidekiq, I get errror:
Redis::CannotConnectError (Error connecting to Redis on 127.0.0.1:6379 (Redis::TimeoutError))
Please how do I fix this? Can you point me to the right track?
    Thanks.

Hello Olauluwa. Sidekiq has a troubleshooting page that includes a link to the Sidekiq Google Group: https://github.com/mperham/sidekiq/wiki/Problems-and-Troubleshooting. That is probably a better place to get help.

Scalability today is no longer a question of which programming language you use, or (largely) which web architecture you choose.
